What is Retina and Vitreous?

In a healthy eye, images are focused onto the retina and then converted into electrical signals that are sent to the brain for processing. The vitreous body of the eye is a clear gel that fills the space between the retina and the lens.

What is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Retinal damage secondary to diabetes.

What is the treatment for Diabetic Retinopathy?

  • Early Stage: Control of Diabetes
  • Vision-Threatening Stage: Laser photocoagulation / Intravitreal Injections
  • Advanced Stage: Vitrectomy surgery

How is the laser treatment done?

It is done as an out-patient procedure. Anesthetic drops are applied. A special contact lens is placed on the eye for focusing the laser beam. The laser is delivered with precision to the area of retinal damage. It is usually not painful. You can go home immediately after the laser procedure.

What does intravitreal injection involve?

It is the process of injection of special drugs like anti-VEGF (Avastin / Lucentis) or Steroids (Triamcinolone acetonide / Ozurdex) into the back of the eye. At Acchutha Eye Care, this procedure is performed in a sterile environment (operation theatre). Patients can go home immediately after the injection and will be reviewed the next day.

Retina and Vitreous Surgery

At Acchutha Eye Care, advanced retina and vitreous surgeries are performed to treat conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, retinal detachment, and vitreous hemorrhage. These procedures are carried out by Dr. C. Balasubramaniam, an experienced ophthalmologist with specialized expertise in retinal care.
